Carmela (she/her) is a second-generation Filipino immigrant residing in colonial Vancouver, BC. Her parents are from Norzagaray, Bulacan and Iriga City, Camarines Sur. Her mom and tita immigrated in the late 1980s and her dad and ‘kuya’ soon joined them before she and her three other siblings were welcomed into this world.
Carmela wanted to join SMC in hopes that it would deepen her relationship with her Filipino roots by giving her an outlet to work within this specific Filipino-Canadian community. While writing is her main creative outlet, she also enjoys learning about different cultures, dancing, and experimenting with other creative mediums like photography and calligraphy. Through the wisdom she gains from healing and studying psychology and astrology, Carmela hopes to help heal others, particularly the Filipinx community, through decolonizing and dismantling learnt beliefs and behaviours to recognize how we can move forward as individuals and as a community.
